"Some Place Not Here": Balearic-inspired album from Berlin's ennio_neon out now

Writer: The KaiserThe Kaiser

"I think overall it’s an album about the resiliency of the human spirit and a hope for a new future together with a sense of hopeful uncertainty."

Kaiser Wilhelm records is excited to release “Some Place Not Here”, the first album from queer composer ennio_neon on October 7th, 2021. Expressing both an excitement for life and a hesitant hope for an uncertain future, the album pulls from house and techno to Italo and Balearic. Moody. Lo-Fi. Nostalgic. Triumphant.

Available globally on all platforms, listen to ennio_neon's "Some Place Not Here".

From the artist:

“These tracks really document the complex set of emotions that I was feeling during that first year of the lockdown -- I think overall it’s an album about the resiliency of the human spirit and a hope for a new future together with a sense of hopeful uncertainty. To get that through, I needed to really do something with not just the song structure, but also with the sound design. That’s why a lot of things, including the pretty, melodic elements, are very heavily processed, edgy, and gritty.

“As listeners, we are so conditioned for pretty things to sound pretty and darker things to sound dark -- but what happens if we throw the harder things with the pretty things? I think this gives a sense of uncertainty because it doesn’t play into the normal way we are used to hearing things. What better way to encapsulate the feelings of the pandemic than that? Nothing is normal. Things don’t ever feel right. But I still maintain my optimism through the uncertainty. I also don’t want to make another album that sounds like other people. It’s a new era. Let’s make new sounds.”

Sun Is Shining but I’m Moody

Baked in a warm, wistful afterglow, “Sun Is Shining but I'm Moody” looks back to summers of the past. Distorted kicks, ancestral rhythms, and sweeping synths hit the elusive sweet spot between nostalgia, optimism, and hedonism.

A Certain Sense of Urgency

“A Certain Sense of Urgency” is an ethereal, playful tune. A flute dances through the track like fairies slowly awakening you from a midsummer night’s dream, whilst the tribal beats and dubby bassline hit you like coffee, reminding you it’s time to hurry up; you’re gonna be late for that dance in the park.

Dancing on Sunshine

“Dancing on Sunshine” turns up the fun factor with a sun-kissed house anthem that will light the fire beneath any dancefloor. Expect rolling snares, neon-dipped synths, and glistening hooks designed to keep the clouds at bay. Sunset roller skate date, anyone?

Don’t Harsh My Mellow

“Don’t Harsh My Mellow” is propelled by an off-kilter piano that revolves and flashes over clean claps and driving drums, leaving the listener tipsy on its hypnotic groove. It’s like being dragged on to a Tilt-A-Whirl by someone you’re falling for: refreshing, hopeful, and intoxicating.

The Men Are Going Off to War

“The Men Are Going Off to War” is a triumph essay on the resiliency of the human spirit. Sad strings and moaning cellos express a sense of longing, like a mother watching her child go off to war. A twisted steel drum carries the call to arms while the hard tribal drums push us to continue to march forward despite the sadness we have within. Life continues, and so must we.

Drifting Into Shore at Sunset

Floating gently on waves of nostalgia, “Drifting Into Shore at Sunset” is an introspective, hopeful track that slows down the pace a bit. Bass and synth bounce together in harmony, it’s like that feeling of everything being ok, affirmed by the drums, lulling you through like the tide rolling in.

A Storm’s a Comin

“A Storm’s a Comin” is a modern Italo burner. Distorted vocal-synths and rolling bass boil like dark clouds approaching. Ominous strings forebode an uncertainty ahead while sharp snares and claps cut through the track like lightning flashing across the sky.
